iPhone in China: Sales of 5,000 and climbing

The iPhone went on sale last week in China.Cupertino’s carrier China Unicom, announced that only 5,000 customers had purchased the phone. In this case, the handset may have trouble meeting sales expectations to sell 1 million iPhones per year by China Unicorn

iphonePrice could be one deterrent — the iPhone prices starts at USD$730 plus monthly subscriber fees, and you’re soon looking at a pricey phone in a china where the average income of city workers in 2008 was less than $4,300.Another problem could be the wide choice of devices available to the consumer in china. In addition to cheaper gray-market iPhone sales — the iPhone has to contend with a number of competitors. These range from Nokia phones, which dominate the market, to iPhone knockoffs and Android phones.

Brian Marshall, an analyst at Broadpoint AmTech, told MacNewsWorld “It’s most likely a combination of all these factors,” . However, he’s optimistic that things will pick up for the iPhone. Marshall said “Over time, I think the iPhone scales nicely in China,” .”I think China Unicom’s figure of 1 million iPhone sales a year is conservative.”

Apple may need to do something about price.According to BusinessWeek it had a similar experience with the iPhone in India, .The iPhone was launched in India in August of 2008, and by April 2009 but total sales were less than 20,000.and it could be possibly the case in China, price and competition from an market leader — Nokia again — making things difficult for the iPhone in India.
