Motorola Droid accounts for 1.49% of all mobile internet traffic in US
The Motorola Droid, Verizon finally has a phone capable of going head to head with the iPhone. It’s a gorgeous, full-featured little handset with just as much sex appeal as the iPhone, running Android, a smartphone operating system just as capable than the iPhone OS.With all the hype surrounding Verizon Wireless’ Droid smartphone there seems to be one thing that the Droid can’t do that Apple’s iPhone can and that is move a lot of devices in the course of one weekend.
The Droid sold an estimated 100,000 units in the first two days from its Nov. 6 release-a solid start for the much-anticipated phone.Data taken on November 11th shows that the Motorola Droid accounts for 1.49% of all mobile internet traffic in the United States. That number does not seem particularly significant, but consider the fact that the Android operating system only accounted for 6.33%. That means the Droid is already accounting for a quarter of all Android mobile internet traffic. But this is nowhere near the 1 million both the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S sold in their opening weekends.
While it may be unfair to judge a devices longevity based on the sales of the launch weekend.but one thing is very clear, Verizon has spent a lot of money marketing a positioning Droid as the iPhone killer and with an estimated marketing campaign reported to be close to $100,000,000 USD it’s safe to assume Verizon is in it for the long haul.
It looks like Verizon has a success on its hands: Motorola has already managed to ship 100K Droid phones in its first weekend alone, which certainly looks like they’ve got a breakway handset on their hands… Motorola’s first major success since the launch of the sexy Razr.
